A growing group of Wynnewood neighbors is rethinking what it means to grow older at home, writes Denali Sagner for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Residents are launching Lower Merion Village, a new community-based organization designed to help residents age in place with dignity, connection, and support. Inspired by the national Village to Village Network, the initiative links older adults to social activities, rides, light household help, and volunteer support. Residents will have all this rooted in the neighborhoods they love.
Local resident Bonnie Asher saw firsthand how the village model helped her own mother remain independent into her late 90s. Now, at 74, Asher says the Lower Merion version has already brought meaningful friendships and a busy calendar of walks, lectures, coffee meetups, and volunteer events.
The group received early funding through Lower Merion Township’s American Rescue Plan nonprofit grant program. The village is still in its early stages, working toward 501(c)(3) status and building a membership structure, with dues expected to remain far more affordable than traditional assisted living.
Organizers say the goal is simple: reduce isolation, improve safety, and build a stronger, more connected Lower Merion for older residents.
