Giant Closes Willow Grove Center as Strategy Shifts

Giant Co. plans to close its Willow Grove fulfillment center as it shifts online operations to in-store fulfillment across the region.

Giant is shutting down a fulfillment center in Willow Grove and others as the grocery chain transitions away from centralized online order operations, writes Emma Dooling for Philadelphia Business Journal.

The Willow Grove facility is among five Pennsylvania sites expected to close by the end of the first quarter of 2026, according to Giant parent company Ahold Delhaize USA.

The move reflects Giant’s decision to discontinue its centralized fulfillment model and shift fully to in-store fulfillment. Giant operates more than 70 stores in the Philadelphia region, which will now handle online grocery orders directly.

While Giant confirmed that 128 employees at its Philadelphia Island Avenue center will be offered roles at nearby stores, the company has not disclosed how many workers will be affected at the Willow Grove location or the other Pennsylvania facilities. No Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification filings had been submitted for those sites as of midweek.

Giant said the Philadelphia area remains a key market and emphasized that e-commerce continues to be an important part of its business, despite the operational shift. The closures are expected to result in a $35 million non-cash impairment charge for Ahold Delhaize USA.
