Willow Grove SDA Food Pantry Gets Massive Grant from County

Montgomery County gives staggering grant to help the Willow Grove SDA Food Pantry during Hunger Action Month.

On Tuesday, Montgomery County Commissioners wrote a check for local food drives across the county for $500,000 and presented it to the Willow Grove SDA Food Pantry, reports John Worthington for Main Line Media News. The county made an identical donation last year, bringing the total contribution to $1 million.

September is Hunger Action Month and the check came at a critical time. Over the last year, food pantries have seen a 60 percent increase in visits. Around 20 percent of Montgomery County families are food insecure which is a 43 percent increase over last year.

“Like everything else, the cost of food continues to rise,” said County Commissioner Jamila Winder.“Parents working full-time to make ends meet may find that it isn’t enough when it’s time to gather around the dinner table at night.”

The Willow Grove SDA Food Pantry is no exception to the problem. Since COVID, they have increased their operation from once a month to three times a week. The grant will help to feed families in need throughout the county.
