The Schuylkill River in Pennsylvania is one of three rivers being considered for Pennsylvania’s 2026 River of the Year honors, as selected by the Pennsylvania Organization for Watersheds & Rivers.
The Schuylkill is known for being an urban oasis surrounded by the backdrop of a gorgeous skyline along with bustling roads.
It has such a rich history, including its heavy use by the Lenni Lenape and its status of serving as the first municipal scale water system with the Fairmount Water Works.
Over the years, the Schuylkill has been transformed from being rather lifeless and heavily polluted to become a diverse wildlife habitat. It’s not only used by various animal species — including more than 40 species of fish — but also as a recreational spot for local residents.
Additionally, more than 1.5 million people rely on the Schuylkill River for their drinking water.
The two other Pennsylvania rivers being considered as the top in Pennsylvania are the Chillisquaque Creek and the Conestoga River, respectively.
