Atop PECO’s headquarters in Center City lies an unexpected oasis that’s helping to shape a greener future for our region.

Spanning more than 45,000 square feet, the PECO Green Roof is one of the largest of its kind on an existing building in Pennsylvania — and it’s doing more than just beautifying the skyline. It’s a model of environmental sustainability in action and a critical part of PECO’s ongoing commitment to building a cleaner and brighter energy future for southeastern Pennsylvania

In honor of World Green Roof Day on June 6, PECO is spotlighting this vibrant rooftop garden and the role it plays in advancing environmental sustainability. Watch the video below to explore the PECO Green Roof and learn how it contributes to a more sustainable future.

Created in partnership with the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, the PECO Green Roof demonstrates how innovation can be both beautiful and beneficial. Featuring more than 15 varieties of low-maintenance, drought-tolerant vegetation, the rooftop not only improves the view, but it also delivers measurable environmental benefits every day.

The PECO Green Roof plays a major role in helping to manage Philadelphia’s stormwater and reduce the building’s environmental footprint. Each year, it captures and absorbs 60 to 70 percent of the 1.5 million gallons of rain that falls on the building’s surface, significantly reducing runoff into the Schuylkill River and Delaware River and helping to prevent flooding. It also supports carbon absorption, air purification, and pollinator habitats, making it a key part of the city’s green infrastructure.

Additionally, the vegetated rooftop helps PECO lower is energy consumption by insulating the roof and moderating temperature extremes.

The Green Roof is one of many initiatives that support PECO’s Path to Clean. As the region’s largest electric and natural gas energy company, PECO understands our responsibility to lead the transition to a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.

From modernizing infrastructure to support cleaner energy, to investing in electric transportation, to implementing initiatives like the Green Roof, PECO is embedding sustainability into multiple aspects of its operations.

Innovation and environmental stewardship can and should go hand in hand. Learn more about how PECO is committed to advancing solutions that benefit both people and the planet.
