A Huntingdon Valley estate with deep ties to both local history and Philadelphia sports is now on the market for $3.9 million, reports Ryan Mulligan for the Philadelphia Business Journal.
The nearly seven-acre property was once home to Harold Katz, the late Philadelphia 76ers owner and founder of Nutrisystem. Katz purchased the estate in 1979 and lived there until his passing earlier this year at age 87. Under his ownership, the Sixers secured their last NBA championship in 1983, a highlight of his tenure before selling the team to Comcast Spectacor in 1996.
The estate was built in 1938 for George Elkins Jr., the first president of Abington Memorial Hospital. Its 8,372-square-foot residence exemplifies neoclassical architecture. The six-bedroom, 10-bath manor features eight fireplaces, double solariums, and a grand hallway with soaring ceilings.
The crown jewel is a massive sportsplex designed for both leisure and entertainment. Inside, it holds a basketball court, tennis and squash courts, an indoor pool, sauna, gym, two bars, and even a full kitchen. Outside, there’s an additional pool, cabana, and tennis court framed by gardens and towering trees.
