Growing up, football and change has been the two constants that have guided Autumn Lockwood’s life, writes Abigail Cuffey for Women’s Health.
A soccer player at the University of Arizona, Lockwood went on to graduate with a degree in criminal justice. Through she had the initial intention of becoming a special agent, she started to question whether that was really the path she wanted to take.
Lockwood then had an epiphany, remembering how much she enjoyed being in the weight room. Understanding there were a lack of female strength coaches, she was motivated to become one.
From there, she moved back to Arizona and started training under her former strength coach before eventually moving on to UNLV.
In 2022, the Philadelphia Eagles hired her as a strength and conditioning associate. After her contract ended, she was hired by the Birds as associate performance coach.
A year later, she became the first Black woman to coach in a Super Bowl, and then this year became the first Black woman to coach a Super Bowl-winning team.
“It’s just cool to be able to help move the needle a little bit further,” Autumn Lockwood said about the two feats.
She hopes she is setting the path for other young women coming behind her.
