Oreland’s Tommy Conwell on Not Letting Music Fade

Oreland’s Tommy Conwell left behind the packed stadiums and major-label success to focus more on his family, but he never let the music fade.

Oreland’s Tommy Conwell has left behind the packed stadiums and major-label success to focus more on his family, but he has never let the music fade, writes J.F. Pirro for the Main Line Today.

Together with his backup band, the Young Rumblers, Conwell climbed to the top of the Philadelphia region’s rock ’n’ roll scene in the 1980s. But now that his younger children, Tommy, 16, and Chloe, 15, are older, he is picking up his craft once again with renewed energy.

“For years, I didn’t give my craft the respect it deserved,” said Conwell. “I let it atrophy somewhat significantly at times, but a wife doesn’t want you out until 2 a.m. every night.”

However, he has refused to let it die completely.

“I’m still doing it – and, in some ways, this is better than ever,” he said. “I’m not saying the appearances are better or the buzz is better … just maybe the outcome.”

The comeback is working: Conwell and his Young Rumblers are being honored by Ardmore Music Hall as the first act since the venue’s revival to sell out ten consecutive shows.
