After more than six hours of tension-filled baseball, North Penn High School’s season all came down to a balk, writes Ryan Dunleavy for the New York Post.
The team’s run for the 6A state baseball title ended in stunning fashion last Friday night at Penn State, when pitcher Caleb Price was called for a balk in the bottom of the 13th inning. This drove in the game’s only run and delivered Cedar Cliff its first-ever state championship.
The marathon matchup, now the longest baseball championship game in Pennsylvania history, saw both teams locked in a scorelss battle well into the night. But after Cedar Cliff, loaded the bases with outs and worked a 3-0 count, a sudden flinch form Prince drew the umpire’s call.
The balk sent base-runner Michael Boblick trotting home and left Noth Penn players frozen in disbelief.
Video of the moment showed the Knight’s catcher slamming his gear to the ground in frustration as Price raised his arms in protest.
Despite the crushing loss, North Penn High School’s gritty performance and historic endurance showcased the best of Montco baseball.
