Six dogs abandoned in cages behind a shopping center are now in the care of Montgomery County SPCA in Conshohocken, while Cheltenham Township police search for the culprit, writes Caroline Goggin for 6abc.
The police said they found the six Australian cattle dogs – five together in one cage and their dad in the other – around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday. They immediately took the pooches to the Montgomery County SPCA.
“When they arrived, they literally smelled like sewage, like a drainage field, and it was really sad,” Christiana Young, said the shelter manager at the SPCA.
“All of these puppies were underweight,” added Tracie Graham, the SPCA’s interim executive director. “They were covered in feces and urine. They are stunted, which means that their bodies are rather small for the age of the dog.”
Detectives with Cheltenham Township Police Department are working with SPCA Humane Society Police Officers to identify the person who abandoned and neglected the animals. They are also asking for public assistance in locating the responsible party.
“There is absolutely no reason to just abandon animals in a parking lot,” said Graham. “There are shelters. There are other options.”
