Jefferson Health and Cigna Reach New Multi-Year Agreement After Contract Impasse

After failing to reach an agreement at the end of their 20-year relationship, Jefferson Health and Cigna have secured a new multi-year deal.

After failing to reach a new contract following the end of their 20-year relationship last month, Jefferson Health and Cigna have now secured a new multi-year commercial insurance agreement, writes Dino Ciliberti for the Patch.

The deal guarantees that the hospitals, physician practices, and providers remain in-network for Cigna insurance customers.

“We appreciate the patience and support of our community throughout this process of ensuring that our patients have uninterrupted access to the trusted providers who know them best,” said the health network. “Jefferson Health remains committed to delivering high-quality, compassionate, and accessible care to the patients and families we serve.”

Jefferson Health operates over two dozen hospitals, medical practices, urgent care facilities, rehab centers, outpatient care centers, and more across Greater Philadelphia, including Abington and Lansdale.

During the disagreement over the new contract, the health organization stated that it did not reflect the true cost of delivering care. Cigna’s reimbursement rates have risen by just three percent since 2020, while the Hospital Wage Index has grown 20 percent and CPI-U has climbed 21 percent, according to the healthcare provider.
