Caroline M. Merrill, a retired nurse, daycare assistant, and exercise enthusiast, died on March 29 aged 110 at her home in Ardmore House, writes Gary Miles for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Merrill, celebrated as the oldest Montgomery County resident and fourth-oldest Pennsylvanian, became a local celebrity thanks to her age, energy, and endearing personality. She appeared in many television, newspaper, and video interviews over the last decade, sharing her thoughts on longevity and life in Ardmore.

She believed the fundamentals for long and healthy life were “eat fresh fruits and vegetables, and drink plenty of water. Do what the doctor says. Laugh as much as you can. Enjoy music and keep a song in your head. Stay in touch with family and friends. Enjoy each day God has blessed you.”

She celebrated her 110th birthday on October 29 and was honored with a Senate citation presented by State Senator Amanda Cappelletti.

“Ms. Merrill is a unique member of our community who embodies positive aging in Lower Merion,” stated the citation.

She was a lifelong member of Zion Baptist Church of Ardmore, and sang in the choir for over 60 years.
