West Philly Native Will Smith to Release First Album in Two Decades

Will Smith, who made his initial claim to fame in the music industry before turning to acting, is making a triumphant return to music.

After a two-decade-long hiatus in the music industry, Will Smith is making a comeback with a new album, writes Rania Aniftos for Billboard.

On Friday, March 28, Smith will be releasing the new 14-track album, titled Based On A True Story.

The West Philadelphia native recently took to Instagram to share his excitement in getting this new album out to the public.

During a January interview, Smith spoke about why he was releasing an album after 20 years.

“A well opened up inside of me, a well of understanding of art and pain … all kinds of things that I didn’t even know were in there,” he said. “A big part of my music now is about that: the ecstatic kind of joy I remember from church when I was growing up; the ability to try to make this place more bearable.”

Smith’s most recent album, Lost and Found, was released back in 2005.

Smith has hinted that he may release multiple other albums under the Based On A True Story banner.
