The Salvation Army Norristown Corps celebrated the reopening of its food pantry with a ribbon-cutting after a major transformation, report Miguel Martinez-Valle and Cherise Lynch for NBC10 Philadelphia.
The pantry has been revamped to help more families that are struggling with food insecurity by providing them with nutritious food.
Located at 533 Swede Street, the pantry – formerly behind the Corps – has been moved inside, giving visitors more space to browse and creating a more grocery-style experience.
“It’s a blessing,” said Jackie Jones, of Norristown. “Because even people, like senior citizens, that had to stand out there for hours and hours before they can even open… So this is better. We’re in the warm.”
Making the experience more comfortable for its users is just one of the reasons for the move. Organizers also wanted to offer families a choice in what foods they get to take home, and help more people in need.
The Norristown pantry currently serves around 40 families and 120 individuals each week, and it is expected that the new location will help increase these services by 30 percent.
