‘Felt Monster Project’ Connects Abington Middle School Eighth Graders With Their Kindergarten Counterparts

Felt Monster Project at Abington Middle School creates a kinship between eighth-grade students and their kindergarten counterparts, reports Matteo Iadonisi for 6abc.

“This is my favorite thing that I get to do as a teacher,” said Carlee Dougherty, a family and consumer science teacher at Abington Middle School. “I thought it would be a really good way to connect our eighth graders, who are kind of the leaders of the middle school, back to some of the younger students in our district.”

As part of the project, kindergarteners across the district design, name, and craft a personality for their own unique monster on a worksheet.

“They really get to use their imagination,” said Dougherty.

Dougherty’s students then learn new skills, such as sewing, to bring each monster to life as a three-dimensional creation. Once completed, the monster dolls are returned to the kindergarteners, sparking joy and excitement.

“I’m gonna have the confidence to know that I made a little kid happy today,” said eighth-grader Lela Carrington. “My younger sister, she did the same thing. And she, as soon as she came home, was running and excited, showing off her little new friend.”
