Bryn Mawr Home Blends Modern Style, Family Functionality, and a Speakeasy

A Bryn Mawr family renovates their Colonial home, creating a modern retreat with a bourbon room and backyard oasis.

When Lisa and Brian Walsh first saw their Bryn Mawr home in 2023, they fell in love—not with the house, but with the backyard, writes Terri Akman for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Despite the Colonial-style home needing extensive renovations, the lush garden made it irresistible.

To modernize the 3,800-square-foot space, they partnered with Remy Creative Interior Design and Leuzzi Bros. Construction for a six-month transformation. The first floor was reconfigured by removing a load-bearing wall, creating an open-concept kitchen, mudroom, and living area. Upstairs, they expanded the primary suite, added a second walk-in closet, and updated all bedrooms and bathrooms. The home now features five bedrooms, three full baths, and two half-baths.

The kitchen serves as the heart of the home, with a honed porcelain island seating 12. Nearby, a cozy living room flows into the Walshes’ unique bourbon room, designed as a modern speakeasy. The space features a navy blue bar, a brick fireplace, and Brian’s prized bourbon collection, including a rare Pappy Van Winkle.

The backyard remains the family’s favorite space. Their daughters enjoy a custom-built playhouse, while the adults entertain under the covered patio. “This house encompasses everything our family enjoys, sharing time together and separately, ” Brian said. “It’s a place to host family and friends.”
