Mass Casualties Avoided in Abington with SPS Technologies Fire

Officials say mass casualties were avoided in the SPS Technologies fire as hazardous chemicals were stored elsewhere.

A catastrophic event was narrowly avoided when a fire broke out at SPS Technologies’ fastener facility on Highland Avenue in Abington Township last Monday, writes Dino Ciliberti for the Patch.

According to Police Chief Patrick Malloy, mass casualties were prevented because explosive chemicals were stored in separate buildings, away from the fire.

Firefighters acted swiftly to contain the blaze, stopping it from spreading to hazardous materials. At the time, SPS was in the process of relocating these chemicals and has assured authorities they will be removed from the site immediately.

All 60 employees present during the fire escaped unharmed. “By the grace of God or a miracle, there was no loss of life or injuries,” Malloy said.

Air and water quality monitoring has been ongoing since the incident. Demolition crews arrived Friday to help control remaining hotspots at the 600,000-square-foot facility. Due to structural instability, Highland Avenue is closed indefinitely, with security personnel enforcing restricted access.

Jenkintown Borough officials urge residents who encounter debris to report it to 911. A fire marshal and environmental contractor will inspect affected areas, prioritizing Jenkintown School District and homes within the evacuation zone. Residents can request air quality tests and should document any damage for insurance purposes.
