U.S. Rep. Madeleine Dean, who represents parts of Montgomery and Berks counties, recently visited the Resilience Resource Center in Huntingdon Valley, where she spoke about the importance of federal funding for community projects, writes Carmen Russell-Sluchansky for the WHYY.
The nonprofit organization offers mental health services and career training, as well as offering a community space for marginalized communities, like LGBTQ+ youth.
Dean emphasized that federal funding is essential to keeping organizations such as this one that fill critical needs running. This year, $350,000 was requested for the Resilience Resource Center in federal funding, marking the nonprofit’s first time applying for a federal grant.
However, this funding has been delayed due to the lack of a national budget. Currently, the government is operating through “continuing resolutions,” a series of temporary spending measures.
“Community project funding has been utterly derailed by our failure to pass a budget,” said Madeleine Dean. “Continuing resolution after continuing resolution, after continuing resolution. You can’t run a nonprofit that way. You can’t run a business that way. This is utterly irresponsible.”
