In November, the U.S. Department of Education launched an official investigation into potential Title IX violations in Phoenixville Area School District’s athletic programs, writes Evan Brandt for The Daily Local News.
Title IX ensures equal treatment by prohibiting sex-based discrimination in any activities receiving federal funds.
The investigation comes after 11 months of review, following the original complaint filed by Mike and Colleen Padilla, Phoenixville residents for over 20 years and Cornell University graduates.
The complaint was filed after Mike Padilla spent months highlighting disparities in facilities, coaches’ salaries, rewards, and recognition between boys’ and girls’ sports in the district.
He started investigating disparities after the varsity girls’ cross country team, which included his daughter Kenzie, won the school’s first-ever conference championship in 2021. The team was rewarded with T-shirts from the school. In contrast, when Phoenixville High School’s varsity baseball team won its ninth conference championship, the boys received special rings and matching jackets.
“At first I just thought it was a random example of inequality,” said Kenzie. “But then we quickly realized it was a symptom of a larger problem.”
