Life expectancy in the United States has climbed by nearly seven years over the past half-century, writes Stacker.
It rose from 70.8 in 1970 to 77.5 in 2022, according to the CDC. Factors influencing lifespan range from genetics and lifestyle habits to diet, weight, and physical activity. However, where you live also plays a significant role in how long you’re likely to live.
The concept of “blue zones”—regions with unusually high numbers of centenarians, such as Okinawa, Japan, and Sardinia, Italy—has long intrigued researchers. While Pennsylvania doesn’t have a blue zone, some counties, including Montgomery, show higher-than-average life expectancy rates, according to the 2024 County Health Rankings & Roadmaps by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute.
Montgomery County ranks fourth in Pennsylvania for life expectancy, with residents living an average of 80.1 years—2.8 years above the state average. Neighboring Chester County leads the state with a life expectancy of 81.1 years, while Bucks County and Delaware County also rank in the top 20, at 79.3 years and 77.6 years, respectively.
The data was compiled from the National Viral Statistics System. For Montgomery County residents, the findings underscore the county’s relative health advantages within the state.
