The unofficial first family of girls’ flag football in Pennsylvania – the Quinns from Lansdale – is overjoyed now the sport is sanctioned by the state, writes Aaron Carter for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Tim and Katie Quinn started the Athena Warriors flag program about six years ago for their daughters, Caitlin, Kara, Krista, and Keira.
The program started with eight players and a few dedicated mothers also played to ensure every position was filled. A year later, there were over 40 players in the program.
Since then, over 300 girls have participated in the program. Some of them started flag teams at their high schools.
Last week, the PIAA announced it had sanctioned girls’ flag football as an official high school sport. Over 100 high schools plan on fielding teams for the first 2025-26 season.
“We never anticipated this,” said Tim Quinn. “It wasn’t our goal. But the girls put everyone else first. They love the game and wanted others to experience it.”
Now, the father has already set a new objective.
“I have five more states I want to convert,” he said.
