In a move that might be of interest to both history buffs and Broadway fans, The Raab Collection in Ardmore is offering up a rare copy of George Washington’s neutrality proclamation signed by Alexander Hamilton, writes Tori Latham for the Robb Report.
Hamilton helped draft the 1793 Rules of Neutrality, which was owned by one family for generations. The Raab Collection has not found evidence of another signed copy offered for sale. The collection has priced the document at $58,000.
The Rules of Neutrality put on paper Washington’s belief that the United States should stay removed from European wars after the American Revolution.
Washington created the document after French revolutionaries expressed their hope that America would provide its support in their conflict with other European nations. He held Cabinet meetings in the summer of 1793 to come up with the proclamation.
Hamilton, whose life, including the events surrounding the document, was dramatized in the Broadway show of the same name, helped propose, draft, and amend it, as well as assisting in circulating the final document.
