Zibi and Kasia Bieniaszewski have turned the front yard of their Ambler home into a sustainable pollinator garden filled with an array of colorful plants and flowers, writes Sally A. Downey for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
The beautiful, tousled meadow stands in contrast with the manicured lawns surrounding the rest of the couple’s split-level home. A sign in the garden reads: “Whitpain Township Sustainable Property.”
Zibi is a member of the Whitpain Township Environmental Advisory Council. He is now on a mission to get more homeowners to transform their lawns into native habitats that support pollinators and help reduce stormwater runoff.
He enjoys sharing his passion with passersby who stop to admire the lovely plantings in his yard.
The couple purchased their home in 2004 when the yard consisted of a lawn and a few trees. Zibi then took several workshops organized by Wissahickon Trails where he learned about sustainable gardening.
Additionally, he attended a class sponsored by the Montgomery County Beekeepers’ Association. Now he has three hives and welcomes non-colonizing solitary bees to his garden.
“They are better pollinators,” he said.
