Larry Weaner, the founder of Larry Weaner Landscape Associates in Glenside, is a proponent of the native garden when working with landscape clients, writes the staff at ReportWire.

“It’s a partnership with nature,” he said, explaining that for more than 40 years, his firm has been walking “the line between fine gardening and ecological restoration.”

When coming up with his designs, he is always cognizant of the natural habitats of plants and tries to use mostly native varieties.

“The idea is to replicate or adapt what’s going in nature,” he said. “And then letting nature express itself and enjoy the surprises it brings.”

He recently transformed a landscape in Huntingdon Valley from mostly lawn to a natural wonderland of managed woodland, meadow, and bog garden. He said when you grow plants native to their region, it better supports biodiversity, and you don’t need to grow a special pollinator garden.

For this home, he incorporated some more former elements closer to the house while letting the landscape get wilder deeper into the property.

For instance, the plantings surrounding the formal pool close to the house were carefully designed, but still have a naturalistic feel.
