Around 9.4 percent of Pennsylvania residents aged 25 to 65 – the bulk of the state’s workforce – do not have a high school diploma, according to 2022 educational attainment data from the U.S. Census, writes Chris Ullery for the Bucks County Courier Times.
With this number, Pennsylvania ties with Massachusetts for the 10th lowest rate of adults without a high school diploma.
Among the counties in the state, Montgomery County came in fifth place with 6.1 percent of its adults not having diplomas. Bucks County is in sixth place with 6.4 percent, and Chester County is in tenth place with 6.9 percent.
Delaware County ranked at No. 14 with 7.6 percent.
Some of the lowest rates of adults without diplomas are in Western and Southeastern Pennsylvania. Most of the Philadelphia collar counties ranked among the top ten counties with the lowest rates of adults without diplomas.
Meanwhile, Philadelphia County ranked significantly lower at No. 44 with around 13 percent working-aged adults with less than a complete high school education.
In all five counties, there is a higher number of men without a high school degree than women, which is a country-wide trend.
