Gregg Downer just finished his 34th season with the Lower Merion Aces.

In his previous 33 years with the Lower Merion High School boys’ basketball team, Gregg Downer has recorded many wins and titles, but his 34th season with the Aces is still one of the most satisfying for the veteran coach, writes Joseph Santoliquito for City of Basketball Love via The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Lower Merion recently won its third District 1 Class 6A championship in four years. But the team was not expected to accomplish that achievement.

They were not expected to win the Central League or take one of the toughest districts in the state.

But not only did the Aces do it, they did it with no supposed college-level recruits on the team.

It is a testament to both the players and the coach and what he has done with the team.

“This could be the most satisfying journey of my career,” said Downer. “I’m so proud of this group. They are 27-1 and the only ones who thought that they could win a district championship were the 15 players on this team. No one saw this coming.”
