With the recent passing of Owen’s Law in Pennsylvania which grants Medicaid coverage for donated breast milk, Mid-Atlantic Mothers’ Milk Bank is asking for more donors, writes Kim Hudson for CBS News.

One of the bank’s donors, Kristin McCann of Pottstown, donates her breast milk in memory of her son Connor.

“I lost my son Connor at 18 weeks gestation in April of 2019,” she explained.

Always looking to do charitable work in his memory, she was inspired to donate her breastmilk last April when she realized she was producing more than she would ever need after the births of her son Noah and daughter Ava.

“Our donors are our heroes,” Denise O’Connor, executive director of Mid-Atlantic Mother’s Milk Bank, said.

More than 300 donors have helped feed babies in homes and 60 hospitals across the East Coast, she said.

Many babies in neonatal intensive care units who are pre-term or have certain cardiac or GI conditions need breast milk to survive, but the mothers are unable to breastfeed. With this new mandate, these mothers will have better access to donated milk.
