The Pottstown-native host of the YouTube series Retro Rest Stop was back in town. While there, he built an episode around The Very Best, a vintage lunch-counter at 252 E. High St.

The show notes on the episode traced its history.

The Very Best was established in 1921 by Greek immigrant Christ George. Its original signature dish was hot dogs, still a specialty.

The recession closed The Very Best in 2015. But it was since reopened by Josh Souders, a Gilbertsville cook.

He retained the interior’s wood-paneled walls, a countertop with stools, and booths with individual jukeboxes.

And to the delight of the Retro Rest Stop host, Souders kept the arcade in the back. Its array of fully operational, cabinet-style video games include classics like Qbert, Missile Command, Ms. Pac-Man, and Asteroids, all operational. Traditional pinball and a working, floor-model jukebox are there as well.

The vlog host ordered lunch and was surprised by its low cost.

“Where else can you get a hot dog, fries, and a soda for $7?” he asked.

“Not at McDonald’s,” the counter person replied. The full catalog of Retro Rest Stop content is at YouTube.
