With springtime in full bloom, Montgomery County residents are justifiably flocking outdoors. Lauren Vaughn — Pottsgrove High School writer for its paper, The Falcon — highlights a hidden gem: Althouse Arboretum, 1794 Gilbertsville Rd., Pottstown.

According to its website and Facebook page, Althouse Arboretum is named for the property’s last two residents: a Reverend John N. Althouse and his wife, Violet.

It operates under GreenAllies, a borough nonprofit dedicated to “ … empowering and supporting students as they become environmental sustainability leaders.”

The arboretum’s design was student-led; it encompasses 3,000 feet of trails, a Zen garden, a children’s forest, an outdoor classroom, and planted gardens.

Vaughn cites it as a “… place dedicated to youth empowerment ….”

She recommends upcoming events from its calendar:

  • An Apr. 21 craft night
  • A May 6 scavenger hunt 5k
  • A May 13 Mother’s Day flower sale

Vaughn is also excited about a May 18 youth empowerment day, at which students like her will explore the value in volunteering for a nonprofit organization.
