Eating out at restaurants has gotten a lot more expensive in the last few years, but Lonnie Golden, an economics professor at Penn State Abington, says that eating out at a nice restaurant doesn’t have to break the bank, writes Brian Neeley for Business News.
When Golden recently took his partner out for dinner in New York City, he said he was caught unguard by how expensive all the entrees were. They ended up sharing a few small plates instead.
Food prices when eating out were 5.4 percent higher in October than it was the same month the previous year. While this is a smaller increase than what was seen in the last two years, it is still high.
Golden says you don’t have to let the high prices keep you from enjoying dining out. He said dividing dishes can be a more economical option.
“And I know it’s not a view you share with everyone who goes out, so you feel it first. You say, ‘Hey, who wants to share?’ Who wants to divide?”
Many restaurant goers are also choosing less expensive entrees and drinks when they go out to eat.
