Couples getting married in the Philadelphia region are using their wedding registries to ask for help to buy a new home, writes Michaelle Bond for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

About one in five couples with registries on The Knot wedding planning website are asking for contributions to a “home fund,” according to the company.

The share of couples who include a home fun on their registries has increased more than 50% since 2018.

The challenging housing market is a big reason for the rising trend. Pricier homes and higher mortgage interest rates are making it more difficult for many newlyweds to save up for the down payment on their dream home.

Lauren Mallon’s fiancé, William Craven, owns a two-bedroom home in Glenside, but the couple is hoping to upgrade once they are married.

When they crunched the numbers, Mallon and Craven realized that without help it could a long time to save up for the home they hope to raise a family in.

That is why they decided to create a home fund on The Knot. They also added a honeymoon fund and some physical gifts.

After their wedding on New Year’s Eve, they plan on starting to look for a new home in Montgomery and Bucks Counties.
