Pat's King of Steaks has been in South Philly since 1930, and will soon operate temporarily from a truck.

For nearly a century, Pat’s King of Steaks has been a South Philadelphia staple for cheesesteak lovers, writes Michael Klein for The Philadelphia Inquirer

Naturally, the old building has needed renovations, so many that the shop would need to shut down for a while.

However, third-generation owner Frank Olivieri wouldn’t allow it as an option.

As a way to maintain revenue, Olivieri has commissioned a 22-foot customized van that will be parked on the building’s Passyunk Avenue side.

Customers will be able to order through its windows.

According to Olivieri, the more than $225,000 truck is currently being outfitted in South Jersey, and is due to arrive in the second week of December.

The interior renovations include a new roof, additional rebar and concrete support, a raised kitchen floor, and new kitchen equipment.

“It’s going to be newer, nicer, and a more pleasant environment for the [six to eight] guys that work in there. It’ll last a lot longer than I will,” said Olivieri.

When the renovations are completed, the truck will then be rolled out for catering and private events, including Penn State games, weddings, bar mitzvahs, and more.
