Places beyond Philadelphia, like Malvern, are perfect life sciences hubs.

The Philadelphia region is having a big life sciences moment thanks in part to its uniqueness among global life sciences hubs, writes Sarah Huffman for Technical.ly

While many other hubs are focused around high-rise buildings, Philadelphia has many different environments, from University City and the Navy Yard to the suburbs like Malvern and King of Prussia

“I think these different environments are really important for Philadelphia,” said John Grady, Wexford Science and Technology’s Senior Vice President, Northeast Region Executive. “Not everybody wants to be in a high-rise building. We continue to see that element of the larger ecosystem is really important as young companies emerge, and they move from scientific leadership to commercial leadership.”

Greater Philadelphia’s biotech and life sciences reputation was bolstered further in late October, when the region was named one of 31 EDA Tech Hubs for its expertise in precision medicine, which looks at genetics, environment, and lifestyle to create the best, personalized medical treatment.

The designation is a sign of the region’s potential to emerge as a global competitor in high-tech manufacturing.
