One more development has been added to the growing list of projects planned along North Broad Street, a pivotal site in the economic, social, and political structures of Philadelphia, writes Jordan Levy for Billy Penn at WHYY.

The 2 million square feet of commercial and residential projects proposed to be constructed around the North Philadelphia Amtrak and SEPTA stations could play a key role in determining a potential future for the corridor, one that has local residents excited but also apprehensive about how it will play out.

A mixed-use five-acre development that aims to revitalize the area around the two stations is being shepherded by SHIFT Capital and Essence Development. The two companies announced this week their intention to make “a major neighborhood investment” into the North Station District that will be guided by “social impact development.”

Other projects that are moving forward include a plan by Bart Blatstein’s Tower Investments to build a 15-story apartment building right behind the AMC Theatre on Broad Street and the transformation of the Beury Building into a mixed-use hotel space.
