For Philadelphia jewelry designer Lia Key, West Chester-based QVC was the “big break” for her brand Valencia Key, writes Ashley Harder for CBS Philadelphia.

Key, raised in West Philadelphia, spent some parts of her childhood in a women’s homeless shelter. She lives by the mantra “your predicament doesn’t determine your destiny.”  

Her mother’s encouragement inspired her to pursue a master’s degree in education and a cosmetology license. Before Key left for college, she received a pair of earrings from her mom, which was meant to serve as a reminder to “choose joy.”  

Key went on to work at QVC’s salon, while also creating jewelry on the side. Her pieces caught the attention of the on-air hosts, who made subtle debuts of her work.  

She was encouraged to submit her jewelry for QVC’s “Big Find for Small Businesses” Award.

Her brand is inspired by her middle name, “Valencia” which means courage and bravery. Key has since expanded the business to make items such as blankets. She also is involved in non-profit work that gives keychains away to inspire hope in individuals.  

She hopes one day to create a school for underserved people and encourage them to pursue professional licenses.
