The night in 1996 Greg Brown watched a young Kobe Bryant play basketball for Lower Merion High School had such a profound effect on him that years later he named his son after the rising star.

Now that son, Kobe Brown, is a rising star athlete with the Los Angeles Clippers, writes Andrew Greif for Los Angeles Times.

Kobe Brown grew up in Huntsville, Alabama, watching Lakers games, imitating his namesake’s moves off the television.  In high school, he was also used as a center on defense and point guard on offense just like Bryant.

At the University of Missouri, he continued to perfect his game taking inspiration from Bryant and other LA Laker greats.

All his dedication eventually paid off. Twenty-seven years after Bryant was selected 13th overall in the NBA draft and began his career with the Los Angeles Lakers, Brown was taken 30th overall by the Clippers earlier in the summer.
