Beth Sholom Synagogue in Elkins Park is open for tours.

Frank Lloyd Wright has designed many highly-celebrated works across the country, but he only designed one synagogue, writes Jim Cheney for Uncovering PA.

He was inspired to design the Beth Sholom Synagogue in Elkins Park because of the vision and words of Rabbi Mortimer J. Cohen, who led the congregation.

Over a six year period, the two men worked together to create a building that while clearly a Wright design, was also infused with Jewish symbolism and Cohen’s vision for his community.

The building was completed in September 1959, shortly after Wright’s death. Today the synagogue is the only intact Wright structure in the Philadelphia area.
