Age Is Just a Number for the Montgomery County Senior Softball League

Manny London looks on during a softball game Monday at School Road Park in Hatfield. London is 91 and still playing in the Montgomery County Senior Softball League.

Manny London, 91, a North Wales resident, and his friends keep their love of the game alive through the Montgomery County Senior Softball League, writes Mike Sielski for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

While at 91, it is starting to get harder for him to move around, London is still an active part of the league acting as manager, cheering section and catcher when the team needs him.

Just last year though, he was pitching at least two games a week. And at one point, he was a member of three different leagues, including one that had him traveling to tournaments.

The Montgomery County Senior Softball League consists of 13 teams and 184 players, all of them 60 or older. They play from mid-April until early October.

Keeping the league active is important to London and his friends because of all the traditions and friendships they have developed throughout the years — even with their growing list of ailments as they get older.

“You’ll see there’s a lot of dropped balls,” London said. “We don’t care. Here’s the motto: ‘If you have fun, you won.’ We have no statistics. We don’t have playoffs. But what we do have is many things besides softball.”
