Five Ways to Manage Interview Stress

Job interviews can feel very high stakes and can lead to anxiety and stress. Even if you’re excited, job interviews can still be very stressful. Here are ways to manage interview stress, according to Flexjobs.

Address Triggers

There are different things that can trigger one’s anxiety. You can learn how to manage them by practicing a mock interview with a friend or mentor.

Research

Make sure you research the company, as well as a little bit more about the role that you applied for. Having meaningful questions prepared will help you feel more organized during the interview.

Don’t Feel Like You Have to Answer Right Away

During the interview, there are a lot of ways your stress can be triggered. For example, a curveball question might catch you off guard, but you don’t have to answer as quickly as possible. Instead, take a sip of water and think about it for a moment.

Smile and Maintain Eye Contact

Eye contact and open posture are associated with positive body language. Make sure you focus on the person asking the question. Smiling can also make you appear more relaxed and composed.

Treat it Like a Conversation

Interviews after all are just conversations between two human beings. Treating it as such will take the pressure off, and help you determine if it is the right position for you.
