Cereal Box Mosaics: Conshohocken Free Library Kicks Off Summer with Free Workshop

Conshohocken Free Library will kick off its summer reading program with a free community workshop led by contemporary collagist Michael Albert, writes M. English for The Times Herald.

Albert, who uses cereal box graphics as his medium of choice, currently has a number of his vibrant pieces on display at Coll’s Custom Framing & Gallery in Conshohocken. A sampling will be exhibited at Conshohocken Free Library during the workshop.

The Albert panels pop with color and display playful breakfast favorites like Lucky Charms leprechaun and Cap’N Crunch. There are also subtle themes and messages that can be found in some, such as a panel designed around the 19th Amendment featuring many iconic women and girls, including Pebbles, Dora the Explorer, and Wonder Woman.

Coll’s proprietor Brian Coll immediately loved Albert’s kaleidoscopic take on the technique. He also realized that this would make him the perfect “opening event for the library’s summer reading program.”

“The (medium) just feels so accessible for everyone…lends itself well to everyone…,” added Coll. “And there are so many different ways to make a collage ‘yours’ — your name, a sport, a hobby…”
