Officer Jeffrey Sullivan of the Lower Merion Police Department has been named the organization’s 2023 Officer of the Year. Ray Hoffman reported the distinction for Mainline Media News.

Sullivan’s honor was bestowed on him as the result of peer votes from his fellow officers. He will be formally recognized at a May 16 Kiwanis Club event in Bryn Mawr.

Jim Hanna, Kiwanis Club member, cited how Sullivan’s exercise of duty aligns with one of the organizations underpinning qualities: To cooperate in creating and maintaining sound public opinion and high idealism, which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism, and goodwill.

Sullivan is an 18-year veteran of the department. He is being recognized for exemplary performance and for his dedication to the department and the citizens of Lower Merion Township.

The accolade comes in conjunction with 2023’s National Police Week, May 9–20. The observance has its roots in a 1962 proclamation by President John F. Kennedy that designated May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day.

In 1988, the day of tribute was expanded to a week.
