One of the buildings that once comprised Norristown State Hospital, the demise of which has affected the area's homeless population.

After the shuttering of the only shelter for single adults in Montgomery County, there has been a gap in services for the homeless population. That is about to change, thanks to a federal COVID-19 relief package.

Five million dollars in federal funding from the 2021 Annual Action Plan will be allocated toward affordable housing and a new homeless shelter, according to a Rachel Ravina story in Mainline Media News.

Based on data from surveys and virtual town halls, Montgomery County residents have expressed the need for affordable housing, rental assistance and a new shelter.

Deputy Director of the Office of Housing and Community Development Terry McMullen said that $3.3 million will go to the development of affordable housing, and $1 million will fund an emergency shelter for the homeless.

A homeless shelter was once located on the grounds of the former Norristown State Hospital, but it closed over the summer.
