Steel River Playhouse in Pottstown has several opportunities for young performers coming over the next few months. Auditions for the play I and You will be held at the end of January. Auditions for the troupe’s summer intensive program, culminating in a performance of Seussical: The Musical, will take place in April.

The Current Need

For I and You, director Leena Devlin seeks two strong actors of any gender, race, or body type that appear to be between ages 17–20.

Auditions will be held on Jan. 25–26, with callbacks by invitation on Jan. 28. The performances will take place on the weekends of April 21–28. The audition will consist of a one- to two-minute comedic or dramatic monologue. Callbacks will be readings from the script.

I and You takes place one afternoon when a student, Anthony, arrives unexpectedly at the door of a classmate, Caroline, bearing a beaten-up copy of Leaves of Grass. The Walt Whitman poetry collection is an urgent assignment from their English teacher.

Homebound owing to illness, Caroline hasn’t been to school in months. But she is as quick and sardonic as Anthony is athletic, sensitive, and popular.

As these two let down their guards and share their secrets, this seemingly mundane project unlocks a much deeper mystery that has brought them together.

Casting for Summer

The summer program at Steel River Playhouse this year will include instruction in acting, dancing, and singing, culminating in a performance of Seussical the Musical, a comedy by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, based on the many children’s stories of Dr. Seuss. Auditions will be held on April 24–26 (callbacks April 29); Performances are the weekends of August 11 and August 18.

In addition to these shows, there are opportunities for a spring workshop that culminates in a performance of Dear Edwina Jr. and summer camps ending in performances of Disney’s High School Musical, Jr. and Elf the Musical, Jr.
