Ambler Dad Gets Caught in the Net of the Georgetown University Tennis Coach Bribery Scandal
The Georgetown University bribery scandal that sent a faculty tennis coach to prison for pocketing more than $3 million has landed Robert Repella, an Ambler dad, on probation. An Associated Press Boston report served up the particulars.
Repella, a former pharmaceutical executive, pleaded guilty to bribing Georgetown University tennis coach Gordon Ernst.
According to testimony, Repella paid Ernst $120,000 to have the school accept his tennis-playing daughter on a sports scholarship.
Repella, it turns out, is only one of a host of parents willing to buy an offspring’s way onto the Washington, D.C. campus. But the other participants in the purchase of influence worked through a middleman, while Repella interacted with Ernst 1:1.
Ernst told Repella that he had to support the tennis program if he wanted his daughter to play. He instructed the local parent to write blank checks to ensure the funds went to the program.
But Ernst pocketed the money instead, according to Repella’s attorney.
For that direct contact with Ernst, Repella has received a year’s probation, home detention (which ended on Labor Day), 220 hours’ community service, and a $220,000 fine.
Ernst was sentenced in July to 30 months in prison.
The complete release on Robert Repella/Gordon Ernst is at the Associated Press Boston.
