Azie on Main's braised short ribs are among the menu items that led to its standout recommendation for area Japanese fare.

Philadelphia Style’s list of the 12 best Japanese restaurants in the area is understandably urban centered: 10 of its recommendations are in the city itself, and one is in Atlantic City. Only one suburban dining experience, Villanova’s Azie on Main, rated mention, as assessed by Nichi Pandey and Emily Pellini.

According to Pandey and Pellini, Azie “…stands at the pinnacle of America’s New Asian movement, which elevates Southeast Asian regional cuisine with hints of European flare.”

The menu is lauded for its variety, covering both meat- and seafood-centric dishes. The standout recommendations for the former are the wasabi soy ribeye and the slow-braised short ribs, in the latter category, it’s the Chilean sea bass and the divers scallops.

Azie also boasts an elevated dessert menu. A favorite conclusion is the fried ice cream, which is served with fruit and chocolate dipping sauces.

The additional recommendations for excellence in Japanese cuisine — in addition to Villanova‘s Azie on Main — is at Philadelphia Style.
