Highly Decorated Chesco Sprinter Makes College Commitment. His New Coach Is One of the Sport’s Legends
Lebron Bessick, a sprinter who graduated from Coatesville High School last month after winning the state championship in both the 400 meters and 4×400 relay, has committed to the University of Houston.
Bessick, who clocked a school-record 46.91 seconds in the 400 meters at the state-championship meet at Shippensburg University, will be coached by Carl Lewis, an assistant with the Cougars and one of the most-decorated men’s track-and-field athletes of all time.
“Lebron has a special talent in the 400 … and he has not scratched the surface of his potential,” Coatesville track coach Damien Henry told PA Prep Live. “He understands how to execute a race plan and has a special combination of strength and speed.”
“My coach and I had long talks almost every day for weeks,” said Bessick. “And he would tell me how he thought I could possibly be a 45-46 guy in the 400, which would open up a lot of doors for me.”
Bessick also played football at Coatesville and had previously committed to playing the sport at Central Michigan University. After his star turn on the track, though, he’s invested in a future in the starting blocks.
He plans to major in sports management.
“There are no limits to his success in the future at the University of Houston,” Henry said of Bessick.
