Secret Cinema Kicks Off 30th Anniversary at Bryn Mawr Film Institute

Jay Schwartz views a film at the Secret Cinema Workshop/Warehouse.

Jay Schwartz will once again showcase the highlights from his extensive Secret Cinema collection as part of its 30th anniversary season that is opening at Bryn Mawr Film Institute on Tuesday, writes Shaun Brady for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Schwartz has accumulated more than 4,000 titles over the years. He has spent the last three decades sharing the gems from the collection with audiences both in the Philadelphia region and beyond. He plans to kick off the milestone season by screening short films he first showed during the series’ inaugural year in 1992.

The program will be projected on film and will include vintage cartoons, Play, Girls!, a two-reel musical comedy from the 1930s, industrial films, and vintage TV commercials. There will also be other surprises that are typical for the series’ penchant for the offbeat and obscure.

For those who are interested in taking a trip to the past, Jay Schwartz offers “a chance to see what real film looks like and a chance to see films with other people.”

“It’s really a different experience watching weird stuff with a like-minded audience,” he said.
