Regional and national merger and acquisition (M&A) activity surged in 2021 following a pandemic-driven depression in 2020, according to a new report from advisory firm RKL LLP, which has an office in Exton. The number of transactions in central and southeastern Pennsylvania increased 55 percent over 2020.

RKL’s 2021 Regional Transaction Report found this surge to be especially pronounced in suburban Philadelphia, including Chester County, which saw a total of 379 transactions in 2021, up from 246 in 2020. In-market buyers and sellers, as well as private equity groups, drove this rise in transaction activity.

Private equity continues to increase its presence in the M&A market in central and southeastern Pennsylvania, with 44 percent of regional deals in 2021 involving private equity investors or sponsor-backed companies.
