It can be frustrating when you feel like you are due for a promotion but you are always seeing it go to someone else.

Are you just over this job? If nothing about the job brings you joy anymore, don’t seek a promotion expecting it be the magic solution.

Expecting a Promotion Based on Time Alone

It’s easy to get caught in the mindset that if you have been with a company for a while, you deserve to advance. But if you still struggle with your basic duties, why would they give you more important ones?

You Can’t Parallel the Responsibilities to Your Experience

What about you makes you qualified for the promotion you want? Just like applying for a job, you should be able to lay out how you meet the qualifications for the role.

Not Having Done Anything Big Lately

If you haven’t done much to separate yourself from the pack, you don’t have a ton of leverage for asking for opportunities. But when you do have that big accomplishment, strike while the iron is hot with asking for a promotion.

Not Following Up

Did you ask for the promotion once years ago and then just never tried again? If you have more achievements and experience since you last asked, try again!

Ultimatums

Nobody likes receiving threats, even in terms of you walking out. If you gamble telling your supervisor to give you what you want or you will leave, be prepared if that game backfires on you.

Not Trying

Some people never even ask for a promotion in the first place. Instead, they just figure their current job is not offering anything, so they should just apply elsewhere. But you never know if you don’t ask. At least try before deciding to look for a new position.

It can be disheartening to feel like you have been rejected for the opportunity you want. But introspection means objectively looking at yourself for what you could be doing better.
