Gen Z survey results on owning a home show interest but a sidetracking of the goal for other priorities.

Gen Z homeownership in the Philadelphia region has a generally positive outlook among its late-teen, early 20s members. However, it doesn’t seem to be a tangible goal many are working on currently. Lilla Szini, Chris Salviati, and Rob Warnock reported the trending hesitancy for the Apartment List.

The tepid interest in purchasing or renting a home could further sink homeownership rate across the country. The notion of purchasing a permanent roof over the head has, despite recent market spikes, been gradually declining for generations.

A survey found that 87 percent of Gen Z view homeownership as being at least somewhat important, which is in line with the rate for millennials. However, fewer members of this demographic consider it to be “extremely important” (26 percent) than millennials (35 percent).

Perhaps some of the coolness toward the concept is related to the general view of this population being able to afford a home or apartment in the first place.

Homeownership is seen as being “at least somewhat attainable” within the next ten years by 77 percent of Gen Z. But only 13 percent think that homeownership is “extremely attainable.”

These statistics are significantly lower than those of both young millennials (21 percent) and older millennials (23 percent).

Meanwhile, only 16 percent Gen Z have made homeownership their top financial priority, which is significantly under the ones who are instead focusing on personal savings and investments (35 percent) and those paying down debt (27 percent).
